resaurants and foods
Italian Immigrants influenced all aspects of American culture. The Italians brought Roman Catholic traditions, as well as many forms of literary arts. They influenced everything from music to architecture. In fact, we can thank Italian immigrants for many of the wedding customs of today such as the groom not seeing the bride before the wedding as well as typical wedding foods like very ornate cakes. But, perhaps the most prominent of all their influences lies in the way Italian immigrants impacted the food scene in America.
Background
All Italians take their food very seriously as it is a major component of their culture. Thus, Italian food is famous throughout the world. A typical Italian day is centered around lunch, or "il pranzo", with the other meals having a lesser importance. Despite some strange Italian cuisine, (did you know Italians eat Snails, Horse, Donkeys, Hedge Hogs, & Guinea Pigs) Italian food is still renowned across the world.

middle - 50s, 60s, 70s, & 80sDuring the 50s and 60s Italian cooking was beginning to become apparent in every American diet, with delis offering salami, pepperoni, mozzarella etc. During the 70s and 80s, many American-made but Italian-inspired dishes crop up including Eggplant Parmigianna, Fried Calamari, and Calzone. At this point, most Americans have accepted Italian cuisine wholeheartedly and are making their own modifications on typical Italian recipes. Ricotta, olive oil, pesto, and espresso are now all commonplace on an America table, along with a slue of other Italian ingredients and foods.

Us Americans are quite familiar with many Italian foods today. When Italian immigrants came to America, they incorporated some American food into their cooking just as we worked Italian foods into ours. The result is a wide variety of Italian-American foods with varying degrees of true Italian authenticity. But, the authenticity of Italian foods no longer matters so much, as we Americans can savor the taste of our own creation, true Italian-American cuisine. Today, we get to experience a blend of cultural cuisine unrivaled in all of the world, and we get to taste the fruits of the Italian Americans and their influence on the foods of America. Without Italian immigrants, who knows where American food might be today.
